Diane Borsato

M.A. (2003)

Performance Artist

"I came to be involved in Performance Studies after meeting several of the faculty at at the Uncommon Senses conference in Montreal. I was interested in pursuing subjects like art in everday life, ritual and play in art, and the experience of the senses - and felt like Performance Studies could offer me a place to augment my studio education with some rigrorous academics.  I think studying at NYU has helped me to develop a larger sense of the theoretical discussions which are intertwined with contemporary art making, and has given me the vocabulary to further articulate the meaning of my own work. The interdisciplinarity of the program has also allowed me to gain experience with performance across the fields of dance, music, and theatre as well as visual arts. As well, my experience in New York - both the culture of the city and the relationships I've made here with artists, writers, and teachers from all over the world - has been intensely enriching to my personal and professional development."

Diane earned an M.F.A. at Concordia University before completing her M.A. in Performance Studies. In previous pieces she has slept with cake, boiled sentimental objects, and danced with strangers. She has squeezed expensive pastries in Taiwan, taken a mannequin to a military prom in Kingston, and broken a world record in Montreal. Recent projects include HOW TO MAKE A SCULPTURE IN AN EMERGENCY at Skol, The Self Love Project at La Centrale, and Museopathy/Empathology with The Agnes Etherington Foundation. In 2003, Diane will be presenting work at Artspeak in Vancouver, The National Museum of Fine Arts in Quebec, and will be the artist in residence at Villa Arson in Nice, France.
